The Still Point

Center For Zen Practice

Zen is, in some ways, very individualistic. Each person sits in silent meditation with the willingness to create compassionate space for everything that arises in life. This can sometimes be a difficult and frightening process and should always be undertaken in the context of a “Sangha” – a community of committed people, and with the support of a “Guide” – a person willing to listen, reflect, and offer encouragement, support, and suggestions.

Books and classes are limited in their ability to hone in on the issues and insights that arise in each individual’s personal meditation and awareness practice.  Sitting for twenty to thirty minutes in the presence of a guide – someone who is willing to listen, reflect, and call attention to possible “things to look at” – is a unique and perhaps essential part of every person’s Zen journey.

Our Resident Guides, Nancy and William Martin, are available for appointments throughout the week. They are also available for email or telephone guidance for people throughout the country and around the world.

In-person guidance:

An appointment is scheduled at the Still Point at a time that is mutually convenient. Daytime, evening, and weekend appointments are available. During this time you will sit for 20-30 minutes with the Guide and explore anything that is coming up for you in your practice. The Guide will listen, reflect, clarify, and offer potential “things to look at”.

E-mail guidance:

Once each week or once every other week you email your questions and explorations to the Guide. They respond with reflections and suggestions in  much the same way as in person. Some people who receive email support find it helpful to keep a journal which they send to the Guide. Again, the Guide would offer reflections and suggestions based on what they notice in the journal.
